Saccharomyces cerevisiaeGenAge entry for SCH9 (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)

Gene information (ID: 590)

Symbol
SCH9
Aliases
HRM2; KOM1
Name
Protein kinase that regulates signal transduction activity and G1 progression
Organism
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (AnAge)
Known functions and activities
Controls cAPK activity, required for nitrogen activation of the FGM pathway

Potential relevance to longevity and/or ageing

Observations
Mutations increase resistance to oxidants and extend lifespan by up to threefold. Stress-resistance transcription factors Msn2/Msn4 and protein kinase Rim15 are required for this life-extension.

Longevity Category
Anti-Longevity
Primary reference
    Observations
The deletion of SCH9, which encodes for a serine threonine kinase, triples the mean life span and increases resistance to oxidative and thermal stress. Mutations that decrease the activity of the Ras/Cyr1/PKA pathway also extend longevity and increase stress resistance by activating transcription factors Msn2/Msn4 and the mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (Sod2).

    Deletion
    Longevity Category
    Anti-Longevity
    Primary reference
      Observations
More than 3 fold extension of chronological lifespan, by day 9 of medium depletion all the WT yeast were dead while 50% sch9 mutants survived
% change in avg or median lifespan
Chronological lifespan is more than 3 fold higher.

      Longevity Category
      Anti-Longevity
      Primary reference
        Observations
Replicative lifespan increased by 40% in the alpha strain
% change in avg or median lifespan
        Replicative lifespan is 40% higher.
