Studies on these animals have shown that the size at birth affected the early-life survival of the specimens but not their longevity. Furthermore, the number of offspring in the first brood was found to be negatively correlated with the mother's lifespan [1454].
There appears to be a fitness cost when acquiring resistance mechanisms for these killifish. Experiments using cadmium as a stressor have shown that the trade-off for acquiring a better resistance were mostly in reproduction and lifespan [1453].
