- Observations
This species consists of two populations: river-dwelling and cave-dwelling. These populations experience differences in the availability of nutrients, with cave-dwelling populations suffering from food shortages. However, both populations have similar lifespans. Cave-dwelling populations appear to counteract the lack of nutrients in their environment by minimising their insulin signalling and dysregulating their blood glucose homeostasis, while avoiding the negative side-effects that accompany such changes [1427].
