GenAge entry for MT1E (Homo sapiens)

Gene name (HAGRID: 292)

HGNC symbol
MT1E
Aliases
MTD; MT1
Common name
metallothionein 1E

Potential relevance to the human ageing process

Main reason for selection
Entry selected based on indirect or inconclusive evidence linking the gene product to ageing in humans or in one or more model systems
Description

MT1E seems to play a role protecting against oxidative stress, although its exact functions are unknown. Cardiac-specific overexpression of MT1E in mice increased lifespan by 14% while attenuating oxidative stress in the heart [3251]. Further studies are warranted.
