In the wild, female octopus brood once in a lifetime, will eat less while caring for their eggs and will eventually die shortly after the eggs have hatched. A study on these octopuses has shown that the removal of both optic glands (endocrine glands) from females leads to changes in behaviour while brooding, an increase in food intake, more body growth and an increase in lifespan [1462].
