Caenorhabditis elegansGenAge entry for frh-1 (Caenorhabditis elegans)

Gene information (ID: 287)

Symbol
frh-1
Name
FRataxin (involved in human Friedrich's ataxia) Homolog
Organism
Caenorhabditis elegans (AnAge)
Known functions and activities
Regulation of mitochondrial iron transport and respiration

Potential relevance to longevity and/or ageing

Observations
While complete knock-out of FRH-1 results in arrested development or short lifespan, partial deficiency (without completely abolishing its expression) extends worm lifespan in a p53 dependent manner. It was however observed that a substantial frataxin suppression (more than 50% compared to wild-type) is required to extend C. elegans lifespan, while lower suppression levels displaying unsignificantly different longevity phenotypes.
% change in max lifespan
Maximum lifespan is aproximately 18% higher.
% change in avg or median lifespan
Median lifespan is aproximately 25% higher.
Lifespan Effect

Genetic Manipulation
RNA interference
Longevity Category
Anti-Longevity
Primary reference
    Observations
Inactivation by RNA interference resulted in small body size, reduced fertility, altered responses to oxidative stress and life-extension.
    Lifespan Effect
    Increase
    Genetic Manipulation
    RNA interference
    Longevity Category
    Anti-Longevity
    Primary reference
      Observations
Upon RNAi lifespan is significantly reduced, and worms have increased sensitivity to oxidative stress.
