RNA interference of BLVRA resulted in an increased percentage of human diploid fibroblasts being arrested in the G0-G1 phase compared to controls. This was also accompanied by an upregulation of CDK inhibitor family members p16, p21 and p53, and a high expression of senescence-associated SA-beta-galactosidase.
